What is the GS1 Global Data
Synchronization Network (GDSN) |
| |
|
The GS1 Global Data Synchronization
Network™, or GDSN™ is an automated,
standards-based global environment that
enables secure and continuous data
synchronization, allowing all partners to
have consistent item data in their systems
at the same time.
GS1 GDSN ensures that data exchanged between
trading partners is accurate and compliant
with universally supported standards.
GS1 GDSN is being realized today by
thousands of retailers and suppliers
worldwide who are reaping the benefits of
live GS1 GDSN implementations. |

What is a data pool? |
| |
|
A data pool is simply an electronic
catalogue of standardized product
information that manages the movement of
this information between trading partners. A
supplier uses a source data pool to make
product
information available to retailers of their
choice, and a retailer uses a recipient data
pool to obtain this product information.
A GDSN (Global Data Synchronization
Network)-certified data pool adheres to the
latest GS1 global standards and communicates
with other GDSN-certified data pools in a
defined manner. This guarantees the
performance, reliability and security of the
entire network and all the product
information stored in the
network. |

The elements of the GS1 Global Data
Synchronization Network (GDSN) |
| |
|
There are three key elements that together
make up the GS1 Global Data Synchronization
Network™ (GDSN™)
1. Standards – the common language of
electronic identification and communication
2. Data pools – the services that hold and
process trading partner data
3. The GS1 Global Registry™ – a worldwide
directory that locates data sources and
manages the ongoing synchronization
relationships between trading partners

What is Global Data Synchronization (GDS)? |
| |
|
Global Data Synchronization (GDS) takes the
process of data synchronization and its
associated benefits further, by ensuring it
is in full compliance with global standards
that have been developed by various industry
groups including GS1.
This means the inefficiencies and increased
costs inherent in proprietary systems are
avoided. Instead, all companies using GDS
only enter their data once and can send this
data to multiple users, nationally and
globally. |

How secure is the service? |
| |
|
GS1 recognizes that information created by
and stored within the MEMA Data Pool is an
important corporate asset. Business
decisions and actions are taken based on
such information. Because information
is expensive to gather, create, store and
use, it is a basic requirement that it
should be protected. In addition, this
information may also be sensitive to the
business and its trading partners. Therefore
MEMA Data Pool taking security extremely
seriously and our technology partner, GXS,
employs the most robust security policies,
procedures and systems.
Although the MEMA Data Pool has the highest
security procedures and technology standards
it should be reminded that the customer is
also responsible for security, through
sensible use of:
-
Access control
-
ID and password control
-
Logging off unattended terminals
